The Maryland 5 Star Daily: Cross-Country
Get your hiking shoes on, because it's cross-country day, and Pierre Le Goupil's inaugural five-star track at the MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill presented by Brown Advisory is beyond exciting. With new jumps and a new take on the terrain, Le Goupil has set up tests unlike ones seen by Maryland competitors and spectators before.
But first, the CCI3*-L competitors must tackle their equally as impressive course at 9:00 a.m. EST. Isabelle Bosley and the 8-year-old Oldenburg gelding Conner (Casiro 3 x Monique), owned by Karin Martin, are sitting in the lead following the conclusion of dressage with a score of 24.8, but fractions of a time penalty sit between Bosley and the remainder in the top 5, so every second will count today around Le Goupil's track. The CCI3*-L course has an optimum time of 9 minutes and 41 seconds which will require horse and riders to move at a speed of 550 meters per minute across the 5,330 meter track.
In the five-star it's Monica Spencer and her 14-year-old Thoroughbred gelding Artist (Guillotine x Maxamore) who leads the field, but as we all know, five-stars are rarely a dressage show. It today's phase, which begins at 1:30 p.m. EST, that can really shake up the standings. The optimum time sits right at 11 minutes and horses will need to be traveling at 570 meters per minute to make that time across the 46-effort track that totals 6,720 meters long.
